Continuing what has so far been 2006's exchange traded fund theme – commodities – Victoria Bay Asset Management launched the long-awaited United States Oil Fund on the American Stock Exchange this morning. The new fund, Victoria Bay's first, is the first in the U.S. to track the price of oil, following in the footsteps of two London ETFs launched last year.
Goldman, UBS To Provide Hedge Funds For Retirement Program Defined Contribution & Savings Plan Alert
Goldman Sachs Asset Management and UBS Investment Management will provide registered hedge funds to support a retirement income program under development at AssetMark Investment Services. In addition, Wilshire Associates will provide tactical asset allocation to individual investors who participate in the program and choose to invest their money in AssetMark's proprietary sub-advised funds. The program is planned for rollout in June.
Crystal River Sets IPO Real Estate Finance & Investment
Crystal River Capital, an investment company formed in 2005 by Hyperion Capital Management, is set to launch its initial public offering in the next couple of weeks. The mortgage REIT is planning to raise $460 million in the IPO, which is being underwritten by Deutsche Bank Securities, Citigroup and Wachovia. Crystal River will sell its shares at $25. The banks had no comment.

The Missouri State Employees Retirement System was named Savviest Public Plan of the Year at an awards ceremony and dinner on Sunday April 2 at the Hyatt Lake Las Vegas Resort, Spa and Casino. Three other pension funds were honored as part of MML's 5th Annual Public Pension Fund Awards: The Massachusetts Pension Reserves Investment Management Board, San Diego County Employees Retirement Association and the Jacksonville (Fla.) Police & Fire Pension Fund.
"Pension funds and major asset managers are realizing we can actually make active bets over there [in the credit derivatives market] without these scary derivative things blowing up in our face," says Tim Backshall.
"China will drive the alternative energy market and help make it a reality," says Robert Watson, senior scientist at the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Eden Rock Capital Management, the London-based fund of hedge funds firm, has hired Michael Staveley to be its new chief investment officer. Staveley, who was previously global head of credit markets at Commerzbank, took over the role last week from Santo Volpe, who remains as Eden Rock's chairman, said Edward Horner, managing director.
